AVMS was a California Distinguished School in 1996 and a National Blue Ribbon School in 2000. It consistently scores high on standardized tests, and is in the top 85% of comparable schools.
AVMS has been host to a "Marathon Team" since the year 2002. It is overseen by the organization "Students Run LA" (SRLA). Former AVMS math teacher Paul Ewell was the head coach of the team for several years, coordinating weekend runs with schools such as Don Juan Avila Middle School and Newhart Middle School. Since the 2007-08 school year, Assistant Principal Mike Marzilli has organized and run with the team.
